I am a 40 year old American. I live in a suburb of a big city, but I only make $20/hr after I lost a better job after struggling with my mental health. I have managed to maintain my apartment which is quite large, because my rent is controlled. I drive a 20 year old car. I never go shopping, and I rely on free breakfast at work so I don't have to buy many groceries, but I do have a cat and am going to get one more next month. I try to focus on staying positive, and I see that you do the same.

The definition of “poor” in developed countries and developing countries is very different. If I lived like you in my country, I would actually be considered rich. Even the middle class in my country doesn’t usually use Apple products.

Your video is the most real and captivating video I’ve seen about living in Korea in a long time. I love your sense of humor and I think a lot of us can relate to different times in our lives where we were struggling. Sending you positive vibes and I hope your channel gets monetized so you can make some extra money and do some of the things you hope for.

born poor and still poor isn't something we can choose, luck plays most parts in our lives even though we try so hard. life is already unfair enough, but still you're living in some children's dreams from other underdeveloped countries. So, keep trying, moving. no need to get stressed at all~

Hi, thanks for sharing! I stayed with a friend in a goshiwon in Gangnam by accident on Airbnb and the whole thing was sus. I had lived in Pyeongtaek earlier and my friend trusted me to book a good place. She was so mad but got us a new one by yelling over the phone. I will never forget it. BTW, thank you for using your real voice and not AI or translators like many. Your English is good! (much better than my Korean) It's good to see what has changed since I was las there in 2017! I am 43 and currently live near Washington DC in 2 rooms and no kitchen. I have some space but had to make a kitchenette. We can get through this, Fighting!

your apartment is yes, quite tiny, yet you have a washing machine + dryer! that's quite a luxury in a lot of places. and even though it's very small, it's still very cute. i don't know if any country can offer a soft landing for someone, to be honest. what you said is true -- being born poor, a recession, a couple bad years, a bad decision, health problems -- it doesn't take a lot for a poor person to become even poorer :( anyways, i'm glad yt randomly suggested your video and now i'm subscribing!

Just subscribed You work so many hours but you can still keep your sense of humor! Well done to you! Could you provide some information about what it means to work and live in Seoul?

My mother used to always say “God bless the child that’s got its own” and it so true. Yes your home is small but it’s yours, when you push your key and open up your door it’s yours. And you have your own washer and dryer too and bathroom, blessings. I live in NYC and they do have apartments that size and charge an arm and a leg. I am blessed to live in a big apartment but it’s rent controlled. I’m always thanking God for everything, I’m 48 by the way 😂 and have one adult daughter and I’m single. But there is nothing like having your peace when you close the door behind you and relax in your home. ❤

The sad thing is that in developed countries, work is almost always pointless. There are few jobs that meaningfully make a difference and we tend to base success off how much your job pays anyway. Very few are lucky to get a job that pays well, makes a difference, and is fun.

Even with your charmingly positive spin on everything, I still couldn’t help but feel depressed at the hopelessness of it all. Working a meaningless ten hour shift just so that you can enjoy an instant noodles dinner and a can of beer, before you do it all over again the next day, and the next day, and the day after that… 🤦🏻

Hello, from Fraser Valley, British Columbia...🇨🇦. 🙂 You did a good job with your channel's first video. Thanks for sharing with the world about your life at 40 in South Korea. It was interesting to me. I am in a similar boat as you, but you're younger than I am. I know that our lives, "life different than others at the 40's & 50's stage of life" is becoming more common these days. All the best to you in life and your channel! 🙏🏻👍👍

Your content is the kind the world needs now. I wish not just that you will have space to live and breathe. I also wish the same for the countless people in the world like yourself who are being crushed by a system which keeps them from having local, multigenerstional community connections based in an ethos of mutual care. A system which severs their ties to the earth/land as well.

Im 39 in the USA and honestly? This looks pretty nice to me. As you said, fewer things to keep up with and after a 10 hour shift at work, winding down with a beer in a cozy space sounds perfect.
