Sarah!! WOW, what you described about not knowing how pine trees actually grew in the twisty, horizontal shape and thought it was just a painting style is EXACTLY what my mom described as one of her first culture shocks when immigrating to Vancouver in the 90s (but reversed, of course)!! Before moving, she had only lived in Korea, and the twisty pine trees are all she knew, but she said she randomly saw a video of Bob Ross painting a landscape with triangular, tall, straight trees, and she thought to herself “Wow? What a unique way to paint a tree… I guess artists really do have an interesting way of imagining things” but never realized pine trees (and other conifers) actually grew straight and tall until she landed in Vancouver 🤣

i feel like its not appreciated enough, but i really love your eye for cinematography and the way you cut from scenes to scenes to tell the story. especially the way you said its getting darker when you're having brunch at your balcony(?) and cut to the rain and umbrella shot. its so gorgeous ❤

In Singapore, the elderly concession for public transport (what people usually call senior concession fares) is a fairly structured scheme that gives cheaper bus/MRT rides to people aged 60 and above. For bus & MRT fares typically around S$0.69 – S$1.07 per trip (card) depending on distance. Compare that to normal adult fare roughly $1.28 – $2.50+. So seniors typically pay about 40–60% less. If seniors tap in before 7:45am (non-peak hours) on weekdays, fares can be as low as S$0.19 – $0.57 depending on distance. There’s also a senior concession pass of $55/mth. Unlimited rides on basic buses + MRT/LRT. Worth it if the person travels frequently (e.g. daily commuting). I think most East Asian countries are either "super-age" societies or are on the way reaching there, eg. China. Singapore's replacement rate has dipped below 1 if im not wrong. You notice that East Asian societies (in the case of Singapore, it's the ethnic chinese that have the lowest birth rates and Malay the highest) are the ones in the race to "extinct" their own type. I think East Asians typically just want a less stressful life, and children do not contribute to that, plus we are living in a more uncertain world with costs that keep increasing. In my opinion, there's no such thing as free public tpt with perhaps a caveat. Unless it's an oil producing country whose govt is willing to pay for such public expenses with the "oil money". Otherwise, it just means you pay for it in other ways, through higher personal income taxes, or some other means. Or the non elderly pay higher tpt fees to subsidise the fares of the elderly folks. But how sustainable this is in the long run or how much longer it can continue is anyone's guess. Europe has very generous welfare benefits, free this n that but maybe that's why their income taxes are insanely high. It's what each society chooses for itself.

Last week, I was on the Seoul Metro and the train suddenly stopped at a station. I thought it was unusual. But everyone got off and quietly waited for the next train that came 7 minutes later. I have gotten used to how efficient the metro system is in Seoul.

Kia ora/Thank you, Kyuho and Sarah, for sharing daily life where you are. The area you visited in this video looks like a fun hangout place for senior citizens and younger people alike. Looks like it is shaping up to be a very hot summer there. Must be nice to have an escape(?) to Canada already planned. Great senior citizens get free public transport in Seoul. Without it the health of seniors would really decline causing other problems and financial burden on society. Here in Auckland, New Zealand public transport is free for residents over 65 during certain hours. There are discounts for children, students and low wage earners. All the best to you and yours.

Glad you are recovered since last week. In Seattle, kids under 18 have ridden free on the buses and light rail for the past 4 years or so. Seniors have had a discount for many many years. I was just in Wangsimni on Thursday, there's a great little hanok café, 뜨아아아 (yes ddaaa), with changing flavors of tiramisu (팥, 쑥). Worth a visit. Also a hanok 설렁탕 restaurant behind / attached to it. I tried 도가니탕 there for the first time.

Wangsimni mentioned! Did you know that that area got its name because the story is that the first king of the Joseon dynasty tasked the monk Muhak with finding a location for the new capital. He ended up in that area and a farmer pointed northwest and said “wangsimni” indicating he should travel 3ish more miles. He did and established the place now occupied by the palace as the new capital, and Seoul was born. I got curious about the spelling of 왕십리역 while on the subway and then wondered why you’d name a place what amounts to a measurement and found this cool fact.

Loved all the kitties in this (and good to see your resident kitties are still happy and healthy too)! I'm torn on the free metro for the elderly, because on one hand, I can see that it is making the transport company go further into debt. On the other hand, these are the same people who voluntarily gave up all their personal gold and priceless family heirlooms in order to help the government stay afloat. It is not their fault that the government hasn't in turn, made it feasible for young people to have families of their own. As we know, creating at minimum replacement level population would almost guarantee maximizing tax dollars to flow through the country and in turn, the transportation company too. I think a happy medium needs to be introduced, like you both said, if they're not working or going to the doctors, etc. then please stay off the metro during rush hours. However, I do think that it should remain free for them outside of rush hour.

0:20 the young is subsidizing the aging society. They’re so encumbered by debt and the native people relocate to other countries. That’s the death spiral happening everywhere. The younger generation aren’t able to secure housing for themselves how can they even think about children. They have to reverse the situation starting now.

I agree that the solution should be to get rid of it and give seniors discounts, higher % by age. If I was 65, sure thatd be annoying, but dude, nothing is free in life. So getting mad about that is kinda an entitled attitude IMO. I know you had the figure on the losses, but I wonder what impact that had a total revenue. Is the system net positive with that figure broken out? Or is there so many older ppl that the entire system is net negative? Either way, giving free rides to that many ppl isnt a good idea. Taxes are already paying for enough things as is.

The problem is those old folks are also growing in political power (population is growing and they’re the most reliable voting group) so it would be pretty bold for a major politician to lead the charge on reducing/eliminating an elderly benefit…especially when elder poverty is a growing concern in Korea.

They should change the law. I think free train rides mean a lot of elderly people who don't work just take the train and buses aimlessly, simply because they are free, and they end up roaming around, causing problems during rush hour. A discounted senior fare is the answer so people use public transit only when it is really needed.

It's incredible that all the streets and those shops, the people are elderly, about 99% of them. I notice that in Korea, most of the street food vendors are also quite a bit older and elderly generation What will happen to all the shops, street stalls, and the country's agriculture sectors, when the older generation passes away in the next couple of decades? Will they be replaced by new group of people or will they die out sadly and quietly? By the way, the retirement age in Korea is 60 years old, which I think was the byproduct of the old days when Korea's life expectancy was less than 70 years old. Today, Korea's life expectancy is 83, one of the highest in the world. That retirement age seems like it's out of step with time.

In Tokyo, we have a Silver Pass that makes most local buses and the Tokyo Metropolitan Subway lines free for people 70 and above. From your visits to Tokyo, you already know that we have so many rail lines—JR, Tokyo Metro another subway, and so many private railways zigzagging the city (Odakyu, Tokyu, Keio, etc.) which don’t fall under this. So depending on the location, Silver Pass might only be useful for those using buses. We are already a super aging society here and many people use the Silver Pass. So when I board the bus at the station it is sometimes 30-40% of the passengers are using the pass and not tapping their transportation card to pay a fare. On some buses during certain times a day, the percentage is higher… This system sometimes comes up for discussion, but I don’t think it will be changed. And I think that is a good thing. The bus now runs JPY250 from my house to the train station, and I imagine that it will be difficult to squeeze JPY500 from my budget for a roundtrip to the station when I’m 70😅 Seoul’s subway system is very well maintained. I find it very convenient. The fares seem to be generally lower than here in Tokyo though, which is wonderful, but at a certain point, they will need to consider fare hikes for everyone in order to maintain the good service that you have. Over the last decade, we have also endured several fare increases on trains and buses, and I’m guessing there will be more 😞

Love the countryside vibe of this area! I used to live there for a while when I first moved to Korea. I love that the neighborhoods are super calm and tidy, and having the super cheap (and sometimes way too loud lol) market nearby is really convenient, but I found it difficult to find stylish, minimalistic cafés there.... Still, I remember this area with the warmth in my heart. And the pines! OMG, one of my favorite art pieces is a woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the Moon Pine tree. I was shocked when I saw it in person in Japan, along with all the other beautiful pines over there. When I think of traditional Asian paintings, I first associate them with these kinds of trees, mountains, and clouds... <3

Adult transit fares in Vancouver range from $2.85 to $5.40 per ride based on number of zones crossed through. Rates in Seoul were only $1.55 when I was there in March 2026. I travelled line 9 in rush hour a few times while in Seoul and it was never as crowded as Expo line here. Our train cars are much smaller with fewer cars per train due to short platforms. I wish we had as comprehensive and large of a system as Seoul.

Thats interesting about free transit for 65 plus. In Vancouver, children 12 and under are free and seniors qualifying based on low incomes pay a flat rate of $45 per year. I imagine these two groups would be a much smaller percentage of the population than Seoul. I am a regular user in Vancouver and there are few children on transit and fewer elderly compared to what I saw in Seoul. Likely because our transit system doesn't have much coverage here and more people drive.

In QLD Australia public transport only cost is 50c for everyone, of course it might change at the next election😂 we are here travelling Korea currently and down the West coast towns and yes have definitely noticed and knew about the seniors free train travel. I read that the Government is trying to increase it to over 70 to minimise the cost of it and I also read they are also trying to change the free hospital visits by making a copayment system, not sure if this is true. I am 65 and I have been catching the trains buses etc here and always stand and never get a seat as always taken and always busy. I definitely think they need to increase the age, as you are correct, I don’t think I am old and having been very active travelling here.
