I graduated from Arizona State University (Masters in Engineering) in the early 2000's, my first job was in a Semiconductor manufacturing unit. Phoenix, AZ had an excellent pool of engineers, high skill technicians and semiconductor industry veterans at that time. Over the last 20 years I have seen so many of those companies close their US factories and moved their operations to East Asia (Taiwan). The company I worked for was very profitable and had chip orders for next 3 years and still our "corporate overlords" - closed our factory. Close to 1200 people were let go in a couple of years! No wonder engineers moved away from this industry...Now these same morons are saying we don't have enough talent!

Just spoke to someone from TSMC at a career fair. Job market was so bad they had to constanttly apply for years, then finally drop down to technician just to get in. There are more than enough workers.

As a semiconductor engineer, this is all BS (being fronted by media like CNBC) to make these chip companies hire from overseas for "starting up their fabs". There are more than enough technicians across Community Colleges that can be developed into a pipeline for technicians(techs make up more % of total workers anywhere). And they will always have unfilled roles on their website because they 1. Layoff and hire skilled people at will in cycles with corporate and investor politics (intel, micron) 2. have those roles for PERM and overseas transfer 3. Pay peanuts and yet 4. conduct multiple rounds of gruelling interview and AI filtering (how does this make sense if you have a so-called shortage)

College is not trade school. This is just manufacturers shifting business financial risk to students. If you want a student to pay to learn the skill you need, they're not an apprentice, they're a share cropper. Pay the full cost of training your future employees, then we'll know if there's a labor shortage in your field. Why are the South Korean semiconductor workers striking? Same reason American students are cautious about risking undischargeable debt for a niche education that could be worthless in a few years when their job is automated or the corporate subsidies go away.

Horrible video is not reality. There are hundreds of people applying for every semiconductor job. Some might be qualified, but many are not because of all the gatekeeping garbage that happens with every company when you actually start working there. See the conflict? Companies don't want anybody to know how their stuff works, yet they need trained specialists to fullfill the roles. You can't have both, especially in a world where employees often leave and go to other competitiors. And now, with Ai replacing many jobs, its all a big joke. Training on the job is awful. Company owners do not actually want to hire humans. Humans are expensive. Robots and ai are much cheaper and they are trying to automate everything as much as possible.

Issues with this video: 1) Intel laid off thousands of American workers from their corporate office and fabrication plants ever since Intel went through 2 CEOs in 5 years. Lip-Bu Tan (current Intel CEO) also laid off even more American workers after taking over for Pat Gelsinger. 2) ICE arrested and deported many foreign Korean workers in Georgia from that Hyundai EV battery factory. So foreign workers are not eager to travel to the USA with ICE having their handcuffs ready to remove them. 3) Trump’s worker visa costs are high because Trump wants Americans to have jobs, not foreigners, even though foreigners have skills/talents/work experience that Americans do not have. 4) The AI bubble will burst. Nearly all AI companies are not profitable. Once AI companies have reached their scale and no longer need new hardware, the supply chain will have too much inventory thus will cut jobs to slowdown production. 5) Semiconductor manufacturing has reached their quantum limit. We cannot make transistors smaller than the diameter of a silicon atom. New computing methods will need to be researched as semiconductors are now at the end of R&D potential. 6) Personal electronics are now being updated with every new generation instead of being overhauled with revolutionary technology. Consumers are keeping their gadgets for longer since there is no reason to upgrade every year or 2 years which causes slower sales and needs slower production output. Slower production means job cuts in semiconductor manufacturing. It is a short term investment for short term problems.

You need to pay fab engineers way more than you are doing rn. It may be unrealistic to match average pay to AI engineers, but rn the salary range is no where near to keep engineers on the fab floor. It's a grueling work. You get in bunny suit, work on equipment hardware and complicated automation systems. A lot of weeks you need to work 50~60hrs minimum. I think people get wrong impression that advanced manufacturing is "easier" because a lot of it is automated, but the reality is that these automated systems are so complex that they need constant human feedback and improvement. There's no magic solution or some revolutionary technology that you can just plug in to let them just run. If you never worked in the industry, you'd be surprised by just how many unique parts/modules are in just a single equipment. Most people get burnt out working in fab and within few years quit.

The major assumption here is that these foreign companies operating inside the US actually want US citizen workers. All this is a setup for extreme lobbying around work visas to make it easier for them to bring in people from out of the country for a lot less on a more permanent basis. Any US worker that does work at these facilities will be stuck under a concrete (not glass) ceiling where they will never see the way up, yet alone be able to find a way to move up.

Stop calling everything a “worker shortage.” America has workers. What we have are employers that, in my view, too often refuse to offer competitive wages and working conditions, fear organized labor, or seek a workforce they believe will be less likely to challenge management over pay, benefits, workplace conditions, or HR practices. If Americans won’t take your job at the wages and conditions you’re offering, stop blaming the workforce. The labor isn’t in short supply—your offer is coming up short.

I’m calling BS. We are here. We are ready and willing to work but not for your chump change of a wage! Houses cost a half million on average, transportation is the worst in both the price of the vehicle and the fuel to support it is higher than in the worlds history. You think talented people are going to settle for your entry level $70-80k/year salary? No. That’s not a living wage anymore. Maybe a decade ago but I am forced to live with my parents at $100k/year and every time I think I have enough for a down payment, rates increase, realtor fees increase, taxes increase, insurance premiums skyrocket into oblivion. No. $150k- $200k/ should be the minimum for experienced electrical engineers.

Jobs in semiconductor factories aren't like your typical 9-to-5 in the U.S. It takes a lot of technical know-how and crazy long hours. It's just the norm in East Asia, but if these companies have to adapt to American work culture, they’re going to bleed cash every year.

I work for a company that has outsourced about 90% of its labor force to India. The biggest reason is not payroll. The biggest reason is the quality of work and the pride in craftsmanship. I had both a call center of 200 insurance agents stateside and 20 in India. If gave the Indians a call list and said these customers policies canceled please call them to reactivate it gets done no push back no questions asked. You give the same list to the USA team tons of complaints, I want to take the easy calls coming in only. Pay doesn’t change anything. The USA workers were all making six figure salaries and they focused more on causing drama and politics then producing and hitting KPI’s to get pay raises. Our country has a societal problem with entitlement, poor work ethic, and poor motivation and we will keep losing jobs until we fix that. The same way I eliminated those 200 positions cuz it wasn’t worth the trouble.

They should model how SpaceX and Tesla do in Texas. SpaceX and Tesla run engineering courses for high school graduates in Texas. If you pass the test at the end of the course, they will pay it and immediately hire you. They offer good salary, benefits and company shares. What retains them to the company is the benefits and company shares. I have 2 nephews who works there and they are now millionaires because of the company shares.

Eightfold AI had described this development of talent shortages for reshoring semiconductor manufacturing - six years ago - based on its data, deep learning models and Talent Intelligence Platform. Great work by Purdue and others in addressing this issue. Nice showcasing of Micron - they had been thinking through about these issues for a long time.

My advice to everyone looking to go to school. Get an Certificate, Associate's, Bachelor is repairing the machines that way if you ever lose your job you can easily find another. There are lots of industries that have machines that need maintenance
