I have to disagree with many of the Korean students advising foreigners not to come for university. I've lived in Korea 14 years, married 10 years ago, worked at a university and with university students for over a decade. The stress that Korean students face is not really something that a foreign student, especially a student coming from a western country, would have to worry about. There are, of course, a few cultural differences that many foreign students might consider annoying, but on the whole, most foreign students would have a great time over here. There's an expression "hometown zero, Korean hero". It certainly is true that you can enjoy a lot more popularity as a foreigner than you might in your own country. So while I agree that for a korean student, it's not the best country, i think it's a different scenario altogether coming in as a foreigner. One important caveat would be that if you're coming from abroad, and if you're not particularly outgoing, you might find yourself quite isolated. But if you're the type of person who likes going out and meeting new people, i actually don't think it's nearly as hard to make friends with koreans as some have suggested. Anyway, just my two cents. There's hardly any drugs at universities here (which some might consider a drawback ㅋㅋ). Tuition costs are a lot lower. The student body has far fewer radicals, though of course, they exist on every campus. The food is great and cheap. And there seemed to be creasing number of young koreans interested in foreigners. So from the perspective of a college student, I don't really see all that many things to complain about.

Seoul was just voted Gen Z's most favourite city for the 5th year in a row. Foreign students are flooding into South Korea any way they possibly can. There is always something fun to do or eat at any time of the day or night, while being the most safe for women. A lot of jealous haters try to scare people away, but just ignore them and see for yourself how cool it is.

Korean education is based on memorizing not questioning, and competition not cooperation among classmates. If you appreciate inquiry based learning do not study in Korea. Most foreign students after graduation cannot stand working for Korean companies due to the discrimination and strict hierarchical system. Do not expect to be treated as equal with Koreans.

To learn Korean, foreigners need to socialize and interact with Koreans. However, in my experience, many Koreans seem far more interested in socializing with white Westerners, especially Americans, than with other foreigners. Graduate students also have very little power compared with their supervisors. Supervisors can control almost every aspect of a student’s academic life, including research, funding, and ultimately whether the student graduates. If a supervisor decides to block a student’s graduation, the university often does little to challenge that decision. Even more seriously, I have seen cases where supervisors take money from students’ stipends. Some demand cash in envelopes, while others go as far as controlling the bank accounts of students they supervise. Because students depend on their supervisors for funding and graduation, challenging them can put their entire academic career at risk. These are not minor inconveniences. They create an environment where foreign graduate students can be socially excluded, financially exploited, and placed in a position of extreme dependence on their supervisors.

What is with this madness? If South Korea no longer has enough domestic students because of demographic decline, then close or merge the excess universities. Keep fewer universities, but make them world-class. Redirect the savings to more urgent priorities such as elderly care, healthcare, childcare, or pension support. Why on earth should the government spend huge amounts on scholarships and continue maintaining universities simply to keep the numbers up by bringing in international students? Universities are meant to serve educational demand. If that demand has permanently fallen, why preserve institutions that are no longer needed? Trying to keep every university alive regardless of demographic reality risks creating expensive white elephants instead of adapting to the country’s changing needs.

Simple! universities have a declining number of students each year, because students have finally realised the degree is no longer worth it. So now Korea is trying to profit from foreign students. Korean universities are great, but going into debt for a degree and to never find a job in korea, is clearly unlogical.

The irony is that by “300k,” they really mean cheap labor. They know they are unlikely to employ you permanently, but they still benefit from cheap labor while collecting money in the name of taxes, health insurance, and other fees. They also systematically encourage the illegal employment of students while they are still studying. At the end of the day, however, they will not employ them permanently, often citing language requirements or other administrative barriers. Even if you know the language, your role is often merely symbolic. You will not have meaningful decision-making power or influence, and your opportunities for professional growth will remain limited. Even after the age of 40, you may still find yourself being ordered around by a much younger Korean colleague.

Korea is on the brink of significant diversification, a change that will continue to accelerate over time, regardless of public sentiment. This transformation is already evident in various aspects of daily life, from the streets and schools to industries. In just ten years, Korea's demographics will likely be markedly different from what we see today, which may come as a surprise to many. To navigate this shift successfully, Korea must prepare mentally, culturally, and in other important ways. One notable result of this diversification is the widening gap between the traditional Korean mindset and the emerging international perspective. While this change brings several advantages, it also presents challenges. For instance, while the streets may not be as clean as they are now, society could become more vibrant and dynamic, though it may also risk becoming less orderly. Balancing these aspects will be crucial for the future of Korea.

Honestly, there have been so many more foreigners coming to Korea lately. What concerns me is whether the Korean government will be able to properly manage and accommodate the growing number of foreign visitors. If things become overwhelming and this leads to unintended problems, I worry that foreigners might misunderstand Korea or end up feeling disappointed with their experience here. The number of visitors will likely continue to grow, so Korea needs to pay even more attention to this in the future. We don't want to disappoint the people who come to Korea. I think many individual Koreans feel the same way. Korea is not perfect, and we certainly will make mistakes along the way. I hope you can understand that. I hope you come to Korea, make some wonderful memories, and return home with a good impression. --- And you don't need to worry too much about racism. In Korea, discrimination based on appearance can actually be more noticeable than discrimination based on race. Regardless of your skin color, if you present yourself well, you will generally be welcomed wherever you go. By “good appearance,” I don't mean that you have to be extremely handsome or beautiful like a model. I mean having a neat, well-groomed, respectable appearance that shows you take good care of yourself. This kind of appearance-based judgment applies not only to foreigners but to Koreans as well. So if you want to have a good experience and participate comfortably in Korean society, just make sure you take good care of yourself and show two things: a pleasant, respectable presence on the outside, and good manners and consideration on the inside. If you do that, you'll generally be welcomed wherever you go in Korea. Just don't behave like Johnny Somali.

Finding work is tough everywhere, Korea is a bit more complex since almost 96% of the country is native Koreans and they can do the work themselves, so even if you got a job (very hard), vertical growth would be tricky unless you are working for a foreign company in Korea or are highly specialized, even then , you have to be fluent in Korean and better if you are invested in the culture to some extent.

The Dean's premise isn't ENTIRELY faulty, but it ignores the financial arbitrage American students exploit. If a student's goal is a cheaper degree in English, then Korea makes perfect sense especially if they are paying it themselves as most do nowadays.

Are you referring to overseas Koreans? South Korea permits dual citizenship for Korean nationals aged 65 and older; however, those under the age of 65 must renounce their foreign citizenship to acquire Korean citizenship. This policy aims to allow older individuals—many of whom may have been forcibly relocated to places like Russia or China—to spend their retirement years comfortably in Korea with dual citizenship. Conversely, for compatriots under 65, Korean citizenship is automatically lost if they do not renounce their foreign citizenship.

I lived in Korea for 5 years. got a masters degree from one of the top 3 universities, all paid by myself. apart from satisfying my curiosity and hunger for knowledge about topics i'm interested in, i didn't gain anything else from it. universities don't help foreign students handle the country move, don't tell how the system works, don't give support for job search or opportunities for making connections and networking, etc. there was ZERO support in my case and for the people around me. some students who had gone to the same uni for undergraduate studies had a better connection to the university and got some advantages. also if they're korean or korean american they also had better opportunities. after you graduate, you basically have a useless, very expensive piece of paper. when the job search starts it gets even worse. these days not even having a degree from a SKY university matters that much, even speaking multiple languages doesn't either. you have better luck if you're american or from a country they're specifically looking for. a mediocre american candidate will get your spot just because they're american. not to mention immigration visits and visa systems are set to make you fail, and are very expensive - like having to pay a fee to apply for a job lol and then once you get a job, the company culture will most likely suck, with you never being accepted fully as part of the team, with weird competition and passive aggressive remarks (even between koreans themselves). unspoken mandatory overtime, having to arrive early, not being able to speak your mind in front of superiors because guess what, they don't wanna know what you think even if they ask. and then society in general, how it's all about appearance and image and who is better and who is richer and it's all so superficial. i wouldn't recommend going to korea to study or live long term. maybe a study abroad semester or something like that. korea is a great country to travel for fun, so many amazing things to do, infrastructure that works so well you sometimes feel like it's a dream. but there is a reason why everything works so well and is so fast and efficient. the human cost behind it is hard to unsee.

As a Korean university student, I hope at least one person read this comment who wants to move or study in Korea because of Kpop and Kdrama. It’s not worthy to come here. Reality is different. Korean society is toxic in many ways, comparing each other, hatred culture etc… also if you’re foreigner it will be more hard

My advice is no, do not ever .. Living there as a foreigner who consumes Korean contents etc might seem attractive and like living your dreams. But the reality is much much harsher. It's really hard to get support and even harder if you're from SEA. Most of them look down on foreigners especially SEA people, and if anything, they only be nice at you because they want something from you. Of course there's nice people too, but I'm just stating the other reality to give people some thoughts before coming to Korea. (Oh, and they literally worship the USA..)

While it is tempting, of which I considered it before, but realizing everything now, I'd rather visit Korea multiple times, or rather have a partner who is Korean, then live or work in Korea, or move out of Korea but maintain connection with Korea, than to study in Korea. I find it difficult for a foreigner to study, live and work in Korea while the locals want to move out.

While Koreans in general are kind, I was shocked to have personally witnessed discrimination of ethnic Koreans who are not South Korean in the country. I think they should really treat their own kindly first before talking about taking in other foreigners. Aside from this, South Korean work culture can be pretty toxic.

Long Time in Korea here. They just want your money. You cannot be a part of the society and you wouldn’t want to. You have to a different type of tough to thrive here. They don’t want you here. They want only your money and your skills to raise themselves and they can’t do that on their own. I enjoy my life but most will have it tough. All that media is bullshit and lies.
