Thank you for another great, insightful video! Through the way you talk about and present your family, and them being willing to be shown in the videos as well, it seems like you share a supporting and loving bond with each other. That is really heartwarming to see and I wish you and your loved ones can share many more beautiful memories in good health together. Having a habit or ritual of doing something together is so meaningful and once someone close to you passes away, it can be a great comfort to have a place or food you deeply connect with them. Your thoughts about how honest people are when it comes to self serving shops are valide. We have more and more farmers that open those to sell their products directly, and while most costumers are honest, there are some that target shops like that to steal money or food. Nowadays most self serving shops in my area have upgraded their security system so it got a lot better. When it comes to roads with many empty store fronts, I realized, that in the past my internal first reaction to big changes has been a bit negative and sceptical. I got a lot better though as I grew to see the positive sides later on as well and well, you just get used to changes in your landscape as time passes by and more of them happen. I came to really appreciate and welcome the changes now as I rather have them, then seeing only the empty shops that used to be filled with people when I grew up. To be fair, I can see the inconveniences business owners would face there so while totally understandable it is still very strange to walk down a street with just empty store fronts. You did a great job with this video and your voice over is really nice and calming to listen to. I wish you all the best!

I very much enjoy your sharing the slices of everyday life in Korea. It's interesting to see our daily human lives around the world. To think we couldn't have had this type of contact with one another 50 years ago is something... Again, thank you for sharing images of your life with us. And happy belated birthday! 🎉

There is something poetic and soothing about your videos. I love how you take the time to observe, analyze and appreciate your environment. About the self-service stores I had the same thought: the more our societies became convenient the more they lost the essential - physical human interactions.
Thank you for this intimate glimpse into the lives of ordinary people in a corner of the world that I would otherwise have been unfamiliar with - the unstaffed stores, in particular, are fascinating as I find this concept unimaginable where I live in the US.
I see many small shops close down in Cheonan and other areas as well. Another problem taking place is that people take their life savings and invest in another chicken or coffee shop; many fail and end up with nothing.

Great video and you chose some excellent examples to explore the subject. I find it so depressing that we're becoming a society where human contact is so limited. Its destroying our neighbourhoods and this doesn't help our economy. Empty buildings and failed businesses is not great for community Morale. Some people can go for days without social interactions, plus we're removing the need for shop attendant jobs. Although I think for the very late/early hours, unattended shops could be a good thing especially for safety concerns and quality of life for the employees. On a good note, it was so touching to see the family activities you do and big love to your Grandma XXX

South Korea where unmanned stores flourish has a high level of citizen social values where honesty is still in high regard. In addition, advanced security technology deters the weaker minds. It’s a bit sad not to see those small Mom & Pop stores where older owners still have a smile to greet you.

Interesting and sad to realize that the issues you’ve presented are worldwide issues nowadays. Same thing in Italy and Europe in general depending where. I think that the struggle comes from a worldwide society that is becoming more and more divided into poor and rich. A society where middle class is disappearing and where the powerful/richer (the top 1% of worldwide population) are becoming more and more powerful/richer by manipulating and exploiting the remaining 99.99% of the population. In the end, I believe it is our fault because we’ve allowed this to happen. But at some point people moved by exasperation will explode as it always occurred in human history whenever too much was too much to take. I hope that when this will occur, we’ll make a better wold for everybody…once and for good. But well, this is an important topic that unites us all, no matter where in the world we are, that would require much more broader discussion. Anyway, thanks for the interesting insite. I see you’ve followed my request and… Sean! As you can see, I’ve learned something more in Hangul.🙂 Hear from you next time.

Who has the time and energy to sit down and man a stall for hours? Everything today is all about scalability and profitability, the more revenue made, the higher the inflation. And the big giants that make the most revenue are the ones driving up inflationary cost. Small business have small profits, and this means too little earnings for today's world where everyone is looking for big earnings.

What should it be? And what matters in life anyway? Okay, it is very nice to have a vibrant city center, with a lot of shops and possibilities. But is human life purpose defined by consumption / buying things? Instead of beeing in mourning about old days we should ask of outselfs, what's important? Thanks for your work and your insight.
Happy Birthday! I had a birthday the 21st of August. I wonder if food trucks would be a viable option in South Korea. Here in my city, rent is extremely high and there has been an explosion of food trucks. Food trucks are mobile so they are able to go to construction sites, business and corporate locations. You can even have them come to family events and celebrations. I had a friend who left her stable job and started a food truck with her son. In the US we have so many types of mobile business, from mechanics to bike repair, computer support to computer repair, Vet services, haircuts, smoothie, coffee, car washing and detailing, the list is endless. All caused by the high rent and energy costs in most major US cities.

Thank you for this thoughtful video. Many of us who grew up in the rural United States have seen similar patterns. In rural places, shops, stores and community anchors close down and fall into disrepair and abandonment as the population ages out without replacement. The young people grow up and leave for better opportunities beyond these small town communities. A community that is within commuter distance of urban centers avoids a lot of this cycle specifically because of its attractiveness as a bedroom community. Inside the boundaries of the urban centers things are a bit different. Within cities, areas go through cycles of boom, maturation, decline and rebirth as the population continuously rediscovers once forgotten corners of the city. But now as you pointed out in your video, even the urban centers are being affected because e-commerce changes the dynamics. As you pointed out, the human touch is being erased from the equation. Commercial efficiency and access are good-but oftentimes cold and hollow in terms of human connectivity.

Here in America we do not have any unmanned stores. 🏬 There are so many “bad actors” that I doubt we ever will. Sounds like a these unmanned shops are really going to hurt people who need jobs. The more these unmanned shops ad AI take over the higher the unemployment will be. I believe eventually society will have to pay the price of unemployment. Recently I saw in China that due to AI, 500 programs went down to 50. It’s a scary time. Thank you for all your AMAZING insights. ❤

Also these empty stores and street have a lot to do with depopulation. Japan and Italy are even more obvious examples.

Happy birthday my Korean brother. I hope you have a grand day. Here in the UK we have had many problems with illegal migrants from the middle east and Africa stealing from stores - so those unmanned stores would be a magnet for theft here. Sadly. Once upon a time we could leave our home and car doors open in trust. Those days are long gone now. Cherish your high trust society.

I am always surprised when i sometimes get a small freebie, like a going to expire..3-in-1 Coffee sachet.. or a sample pack of mints.. whenever I buy things at a Korean mart.. because you usually dun get such things in a Chinese run shop or Japanese shop.. for Japanese shops . They greet you nicely or wrap your purchase nicely but I have never gotten a freebie.

The crazy thing is that a few hundred thousand new businesses pop up every year, as there are no other options for older-aged people (50+), especially. That being said, Korea has always had a volatile economy, being an export-oriented one. It also doesn't help that Koreans are fiercely competitive, fickle, and frankly quite reckless - they will jump into a business they have no experience in and the same one everyone else is doing. Ie, a lifelong civil engineer who loses his job at 50 knows nothing about cooking and opens a fried chicken joint. It's a real struggle for SMEs to survive in Korea, and there needs to be major reform in the labour market. I'm 54 and am blessed to have grown up in Canada (born in Korea) and make foreign currency while working remotely, which goes a long way in Korea, and I am financially secure. Canada (Vancouver) is an extremely expensive place to live. I wish you all the best, Sean!!!

Oh, I can understand so well what you say in this video. I lived in Korea ( Seoul) during 20 years, in the past. After Corona covid I saw so many shops closing . And 4 years later not much has changed. One thing I notice , compare to France: in Korea less and less people visit supermarkets ( and even old traditional markets) as more order almost everything on line. You work hard 👏👏. Still you are lucky to meet people wehn you deliver goods, and very friendly people. Thank you for sharing. I wish you a Happy birthday, and an always good and healthy life 🙏

Happy birthday Seon! I love watching your videos. This one shows the sad reality of little town Korea. As someone who stays in Mokpo (also called Old Mokpo), the number of “임대” signs on store fronts are increasing at an alarming rate. Whenever My wife and I see a rent sign, we always tell each other how sad it is, since that was someone’s dream that is now over. We have a great concern for the future of the country, with less and less children being born, how will it survive in the near future?

Yeah, Korea is dying or at least where I live. I've lived in 일산동구 since 1997 and it used to be so vibrant, filled with people, children everywhere, streets filled up till all hours of the night on weekends and pretty late on weekdays. Construction was everywhere. Now, it's dying. So many stores disappearing with the 임대 signs on windows - I don't know , maybe 30% of the small shops? Then you have big mall ares with anchor stores closing. Once those anchor stores close, all the small shops disappear within a few month as no one goes there anyore. Westerndom and One Mount once lively and filled with cool shops and restaurants are dead, stores and restaurants closed, hardly any little kids any more. It's just so sad. I blame the biggest SCAMDEMIC ever foisted on earth by all the governments - Covid. It was bullshit and it killed entire swaths of small to medium-sized business all over the world, created entire cohorts of lazy, uneducated children and bled people's bank accounts dry as they tried to live through it, all the while governments were printing money like mad, devaluing the value of currencies world-wide.

Subscribed. Happy belated Birthday. What a great video to see right now. I've been thinking the same thing all throughout 2026 in East Seoul - look at all the empty shop spaces that stay empty all year. Who is going to live in these new apartment buildings? I can't not have traditional markets and 포장마차 in Korea. People make community and connect with each other in local food spots, cafe spots, markets and drinking spots! I hope that never goes away.

Happy Birthday! Shops in my town (Ansan) have been closing down for years and there are tons of empty commercial shops and even large buildings. High commercial rents combined with an addiction to online shopping and delivery have basically wiped out every sort of physical storefront. All that remains are sneaker shops, phone shops, fast food places, convenience stores, bakeries, vape shops and tattoo shops.

Happy belated birthday Sean! Thanks for taking us along on your route. A lot of thoughts to reflect on for sure. You wonder if Trump tariffs have had an impact there too. Yes--- a sense of community and human contact and having even a small connection to neighbors and shopkeepers, can enrich your life I agree. In the US I always avoid self checkouts in order to still have that face-to-face contact with a salesperson. Hahaha the old phone booths are a thing of the past, sadly. Although I do a lot of online ordering, I still try to get my share of human connections too. Stay safe on your route!

here is what he left out. the absolute insane government regulations that roll in. for example, each year, there is about 10% increase on minimum wage. if you have ever owned your own business, you would understand how that can tank a small mom and pop store.
