It's crazy. You spend 18 years studying from 7am to 7pm hoping for a good life. But then you're likely gonna end up working from 7am to 7pm anyways for the rest of your life. By the time you're 60 and retire, barely anything is enjoyable anymore.

What’s interesting is that, working alongside Korean students in university, they didn’t really know anything more than we did as American students (besides being fluently bilingual which is awesome). They literally imprison their kids in school for like 14 hours a day to pass extremely bizarre and ludicrous tests that have no application in real life. Ever seen a Korean English test? Utterly worthless nonsense. I wouldn’t have a kid in Korea knowing they’d suffer this insane fate. Something people don’t bring up is how emotionally stunted children born in Korea are. In the west we see children raised from a young age to become athletes suffer a similar fate. But in Korea, nigh on every single child is treated like an academic slave from an early age, never having the free time needed to grow into well-adjusted adults. It’s horrifying

I am an American teaching English in Korea at a hagwon. Every day I ask my students how they are feeling. 80% of the time, the elementary and middle schoolers say, "Tired." Unlike most English teachers here, I actually have a degree in education. I try to teach these kids effectively but the director insists on just brute force busy-work; hours and hours of homework. Rote memorization. My class schedules are packed with so much work that the ONLY way to accomplish it is to just tell them the answers so it becomes little more than handwriting practice. I'm told we were "Customer Service as well as educators"- paid to make parents happy... and what makes parents happy is apparently just filled out workbooks. I have recommended students be held back so they can learn at an appropriate level of difficulty and been refused because it would bruise the parents' ego to consider their kid struggling. My monthly comments are rewritten by the head teacher whenever I say anything too negative, ie; identifying areas of weakness. We have to say that every kid is doing amazing and that their parents' money is having amazing results every time. We have 'honors' students who are scrawling on the desks and fighting. It's all performance. As another teacher put it to me, "We are foreign clowns putting on a show." Korea as a country has invested so much money into English language schools. Yet for all the time, money, and resources that are invested in it, in my experience, Koreans tend to have rather poor English compared to similar foreigners with an equal level of investment... or even less. These kids are legit taught wrong. Like they're practicing for the 과거 or some shit. It's 2026. Pedagogy has developed since then. Psychology and empiricism has developed since then. I firmly believe the Korean 'elite' education system only works through sheer brute force to achieve results. Mediocre results if we consider the level of sweat put into it. Korea's public investment is about $21,476 per student. Then parents pay about 400,000 won a month for a hagwon and that goes up to about $25,000. My 'elite' academy costs parents over $1000 a month. But that number plummets after they graduate secondary school and need to go to university. There's no investment in vocational skills and highly educated kids aren't qualified for jobs that require practical skills. On paper, Korean students excel. Enrollment and literacy is high and test scores are consistently in the highest percentiles internationally. These students are great test-takers. They get results. But are these $25,000 a year type results? Absolutely not. Are these results even real? I had students who can memorize an English script for a speech that a teacher has prepared for them. I've had students who can't memorize shit but could just talk about a topic if I interviewed them, answering my questions and thinking on the fly. The latter kid is gonna go "um", change their mind mid-sentence, search their brain for the right word, etc. That kid is actually gonna be FLUENT and fail. The first kid, the one who just memorized the SOUNDS of a speech without even really understanding the meaning of the words, is going to get a great test score. All this time and money is wasted when we could let the kids be kids and parents be parents. (Edit: I'm not saying America's education system is any better. It has a different set of problems BUT... you get more of your money's worth there. That might be why foreign students do so well there. They come from places where every dollar is put to good use and then arrive at a country with a lot of dollars to use.)

This is interesting but I wish you had lent more attention to the women's rights crisis in Korea too. Women in Korea especially don't want to have children because once they do they will be expected to provide all the care for the child... they won't be able to advance in their careers because they have to spend so much time to raise the child. Additionally, companies in Korea discriminate against women, making it even harder for women to get enough money to support themselves and feel secure enough to have a child. It's tough for men, but its even tougher for women, so I wish you had interviewed more women.

The horrific kpop trainee culture, lookism, materialism, toxic work culture, 1mil price to buy an apartment, chaebol abuse of people, crazy studying, suicides, etc .... i couldn't think past it.

Korean living in S. Korea right now. To your question at the end of the video, I can't. Unless I want to raise children in poverty, I really can't. I'm already taking care of my aging parents and it's already difficult making ends meet, and I'm not about stringing along some spouse to help take care of them because they would probably want kids to add to the family. But the thing is I don't want kids anyway. Raising them to school age and not seeing them til 10pm, then only seeing them beeline to their room to study more until they fall asleep on their desks would absolutely break my heart. I wouldn't want them to take care of me when I reach advanced age when maybe in their time, the economy will only be worse with how it's heading. Edit: Instead of blaming one person for being in an unfortunate situation where they can't have kids, why don't you point that blame to the society that lets people deal with this misfortune on their own? You guys talk about "going against society's norms" or "just hand the kid off to a family member" but you don't think about the person's family or their situation. I'm not going to dump everything about it here. People are going to blame me for my decisions anyway should I choose to have a kid and have parents that still need my help without setting the house on fire. "Why did you have a kid if your family was struggling?" Gee, I just can't win, huh?

I happen to live in Korea with a toddler, and I can tell you, the daycare system here is amazing! My child goes to a normal local daycare, and the teachers are so nice, and the children go out on field trips a couple of times a week. But I can see why it may feel hard for Korean to have babies. Products around babies are extremely expensive. Clothes, strollers, car seats, everything for toddlers/babies/kids is so expensive. If I buy 5 sets of clothes for my child it would cost about $300. But Korean loves babies! Every time I go out with my child, literally a lot of people wave at us and even some kids talk to us in fluent English haha

I really appreciate your perspective. Thank you for sharing. There are a lot of westerners making videos about this crisis and I really wanted to hear from someone who was actually Korean. I am so glad you used humor to lighten the seriousness of this topic. I hope the situation in Korea improves.

Clicked on a video expecting a socio-economic review of Korea by a Korean. Walked away pondering the deeper layers of love and longing. Great video ❤

How is competition still so high when there are ever fewer competitors? I'm sure there are PLENTY of decent-paying jobs and careers outside of high-cost Seoul for decently educated young people.
