It should also be mentioned that attending one of the SKY universities does NOT provide extremely better education but an extremely useful network. That is also where meritocracy ultimately dies.

1. Around 2~3 million dollar home in Seoul to even be "eligible" for marriage 2. No protected maternal/paternal leave 3. Long hours of work/commute 4. Super competitive education and expensive after-school programs for kids 5. All the popular TV-shows and medias about cons of marriages

I’m not South Korean, but I’ve seen how that country’s educational and workplace system crushes children, teenagers and adults. If I WAS unfortunate enough to be South Korean there is no way I’d drag some poor, innocent kid into such a nightmare.

In Brazil, there is a South Korean university professor with a PhD in hypersonic aerodynamics, and deep familiarity and working experience with many advanced weapon systems. When asked what is he doing teaching bleeding edge weapons technology in what many would call a backwater, he replied that he doesn’t want to see his kids go through the hell that is the South Korean education system

Have you seen the English tests for university entrance exams? It's full of complicated wordings and all the questions are "gotcha" questions designed to test the student's focus and concentration. Nothing at all to do with testing whether the student knows English or not. Even native speakers have trouble with it, let alone a young student whom English is a foreign language.

Korean here. Korea has to broaden its definition of success going beyond the academic elitism it usually reveres. Foster entrepreneurial spirit and reducing the education obsession/inflation. The ultimate objective is to make life more hopeful as there would be more flexibilities with more roads to a fulfilling and happy life. The combo of SKY university + Corporate life (or Chaebol life if you are well connected) should be a route but just one of many, because otherwise you have people fighting to enter a diminutive entrance. It's stressing and soul crushing. Dehumanizing. Ultimately, with more hope and confidence about the future, people would have more kids naturally (slowly but for the right reasons, not some Government silly tv ad).

Im from Vietnam and my mom told me that before she met my dad, she planned to marry a south korean man and go to SK start her family with him and give birth to me there but she changed her mind, met my dad, started her family and give birth to me in vietnam instead. And I thought high school in Vietnam is brutal until I looked into South Korean high school.
I lived in Korea and half of my families lives there. It is porpably the most children hostile society I've ever seen in my life. Even if most people are lovely and kind in personal situation, but collective situations they have much other dynamic. An overall frustration of the people in live, and hate everything what doesn't contributes in a direct productive society. Children, disableds, elderlies. We have been there with three little kids. It was a nightmare. From the plane to Korea, the public transport, to shopping, gastronomy, or public places. We were not just unwelcomed. The people even just by seeing us with children made them look at is with pure hate and rudeness. We were even almost kicked from the highspeed train because the kids were talking... no kidding. Not screaming (even if so). Just kids talking while painint picture. It was crazy. Usually a human would expect that people in a society with no children would be happy to see a child or hear it laughing. This would be a sign of hope, that the people are looking for a future or remember their own happy days as a kid, sibling or parent. To see so e color and happyness in their frustrated daily life. This is what you can experience in mediterranean or middle eastern countries. Bad life...but hey...look...a cute child. But it's the total opposit in Korea. In the trains or busses you can truely see in the peoples faces their frustration and hate in life. They gave up. And they reflect their self hate in everything which seems to disturb them in their hated daily routines of their hated life. Korea has more in comon with a Zombie-Movie than with its Pop-Music-Fake-World. It is really an unreal distopia. And as sad as it is, but korea and the people has deserved their situation and future.
마지막 문장 'Korea and the people has deserved their situation'은 한국과 한국 국민이 지금의 상황을 초래했다는 비판적 뉘앙스.

I was stationed in South Korea way back in 1968. And I can contest it was one of the poorest nations in the world. There were hardly trees, due to so many battles. And there wasn't even a highway most cities. Did not have paved roads. There were no highways. And only one train system. A train ride from Teague to Seoul, South Korea, took 8 hours. The train only had one car with air conditioning while most other passengers had to sit in overcrowded train cars with still others riding on top of the train, as well as cling on to the side of the train. And due to the North Korean infiltrations, there was a Nationwide curfew at night. To me now, in this day and age, South Korea is unrecognizable. As I saw it, and I see it as it is today, is remarkable!

I had a Korean friend from uni who said, ever since he left Korea despite his family having a lower income his life has been less stressful than it ever had been compared to when he was back home. Talking about how he used to leave for school at 7 and only come home by 9pm after a plethora of extra classes. Now he finished classes by 3, plays football till the evening and goes to the local shops to have a tea time snack with the boys, heading home by 7. He plans to move again to find better paying jobs after graduation but also said that it won’t be Korea that he’s moving back too unless they’re making him the CEO

IS THIS ANY SURPRISE???? How does a country think people can AFFORD to have children with an economy like SK? This is nothing new in MANY countries and in particular Europe where birth rates are declining at a rapid rate - Italy being the worst. And then we have 100 sites asking the question why? How stupid - try raising children and affording them a future with the way these nation's economies are structured. You are born, you work yourself to death and have to live on a retirment that barely gets you by and those in power wonder why people hold off on having children? really?

A lot of people outside Korea are still picturing chaebols the way they existed before the 1990s, when they really did have outsized influence and close, opaque ties with the state. That image just doesn’t match reality anymore. Today, chaebols have lost a significant amount of power. Top executives are constantly under investigation, frequently summoned by prosecutors or government committees, and quite often end up in court or even in prison. They’re not untouchable figures — if anything, they’re some of the most heavily scrutinized actors in Korean society. On top of that, strong anti-business sentiment means big corporations operate under constant regulatory pressure. If anything, today’s chaebols resemble highly visible, tightly constrained institutions rather than shadowy power brokers.
